Wool Yarn for Crochet: Warmth, Bounce and Care

Wool’s natural crimp can give crochet fabric body and recovery, making it useful for garments, accessories and textured stitches.

Match the wool to the wearer

Wool types and yarn finishes vary in softness and surface character. If the item will touch sensitive skin, test the yarn against the intended area rather than relying on a general label such as “soft.”

Swatch for memory and drape

Work the project stitch, measure, wash according to the band and dry as directed. Wool fabric can relax or bloom after washing, changing both measurements and stitch definition.

Care is specific

Some wool yarns are hand-wash only; others are treated for machine washing. Use a mild detergent appropriate for wool when directed, avoid rough agitation and follow the label’s drying instructions. “Wool” alone does not tell you whether a dryer is safe.

Store clean and dry

Before long-term storage, make sure the finished piece is clean and completely dry. Fold it rather than hanging a heavy item that may stretch.

Keep this in mind

Choose wool by feel and project purpose, then let the individual label control washing and drying.
