Adding a Zipper to a Crochet Pouch Without Distorting the Edge
Share
A zipper is firm and dimensionally stable while crochet can stretch. The installation works best when the pouch opening is measured and supported first.
Choose the zipper after measuring
Block and dry the pouch, then measure the finished opening. Select a zipper that fits the design or shorten it using a method suitable for that zipper type. Never cut before securing the new stop.
Stabilize and baste
Add a firm crochet edging or fabric facing if the opening is very elastic. Centre the closed zipper, clip or pin both sides at matching intervals and hand-baste. Open and close it to confirm that the teeth remain clear.
Sew with small relaxed stitches
Attach the tape to stable edge stitches without pulling them longer. Work from the centre toward the ends on both sides, checking alignment often. A lining can cover the zipper tape later, but the zipper itself should already operate smoothly before the lining is added.
Keep this in mind
Fit the zipper to the blocked opening, stabilize an elastic edge and baste-test the closure before permanent stitching.
