Blocking Granny Squares: Match Size Without Distorted Corners
Share
Blocking can settle small tension differences between motifs, but it cannot make unequal stitch counts truly identical. Start with a structural check.
Sort before blocking
Count sides, corners and final-round stitches. Separate any square with a missing group or different round count for correction. Stack the remaining motifs loosely to see the natural size range.
Choose a realistic template
Use the average correct square, not the largest outlier, to set the target. Mark four equal sides and square corners on a blocking mat or use a clean pegged board designed for motifs.
Support the whole perimeter
Place support at corners and matching repeat points along each side. Measure both diagonals to confirm the motif remains square. Do not drag only the corners outward; that creates points and bowed sides. Apply the fibre-safe blocking method and let every square dry completely before stacking or joining.
Keep this in mind
Correct count errors first, choose an achievable shared measurement and support sides as evenly as corners.
