How to Add Crochet Button Loops That Fit the Button

A useful button loop must be large enough to pass the button's widest point but small enough to stay closed during normal movement. Yarn stretch makes guessing unreliable.

Use the final button

Attach or hold the actual button in its intended position. Make a short chain, form it into a loop and test it around the button. Include any edging thickness the loop must cross.

Account for stretch

Work the sample in the project yarn and stitch. A loose chain or elastic fibre can grow with use, so aim for a secure fit that does not require force. Wash the sample if the finished item will be laundered often.

Anchor both ends firmly

Join the loop to stable edge stitches, not a fragile single strand. Reinforce the base with the pattern's edging or sewing method and weave tails in multiple directions. Test the closure several times before trimming.

Keep this in mind

Size the loop on the real button, allow for yarn stretch and anchor it to a stable section of the edge.
