How to Add Fringe to Crochet Evenly

Fringe looks simple, but variations in fold, knot tension and spacing quickly show along a straight edge. A small template makes the work repeatable.

Cut consistent bundles

Wrap yarn around a firm card cut to the planned length, then cut along one edge. Remember that folded fringe finishes at roughly half the cut length before trimming and knot allowance.

Mark attachment points

Divide the crochet edge into equal sections and distribute bundles symmetrically from the centre or corners. Insert each folded bundle through the same part of the edge stitch so the knots align.

Settle before final trimming

Pull knots snugly without distorting the edge. Hang or lay the piece as it will be used, comb the fringe gently if appropriate for the fibre, and trim against a ruler only after the strands have relaxed. Test care on a sample because fringe can tangle in washing.

Keep this in mind

Standardize cut length, bundle size and attachment point, then let the fringe settle before making the final trim.
