How to Sew a Lining Into a Crochet Bag

Lining should fit the bag after blocking, not an earlier paper measurement. The fabric insert needs enough ease to fill the shape without pulling on the crochet.

Measure the finished interior

Block and dry the bag first. Measure width, height and base depth inside the seams. Draft the lining with appropriate seam allowance and a small amount of ease, then test the paper or muslin shape inside.

Construct the lining separately

Sew side and base seams, finish raw edges and add pockets before insertion. Press the top allowance toward the wrong side. Keep hot tools away from fibres whose care label does not permit heat.

Attach without restricting stretch

Pin or clip the lining around the opening with wrong sides together. Hand-sew it to sturdy crochet stitches using small, evenly spaced passes that do not show outside. Check that handles and closures still move freely.

Keep this in mind

Fit the lining to the blocked bag, complete it separately and hand-sew it to a stable edge without pulling the crochet.
