Chenille and Velvet Yarn: How to See Stitches More Clearly

Plush yarn creates a soft surface by wrapping or attaching pile around a core. That pile can conceal both the stitch structure and small tension differences.

Choose a forgiving setup

Use a simple stitch pattern while learning the yarn. Good overhead light and a contrasting background make the strand easier to follow. A hook that enters cleanly without snagging the pile is more helpful than choosing by material alone.

Feel before inserting

Pinch the top of the next stitch between thumb and finger. The two top loops often feel clearer than they look. Insert the hook only after locating that ridge, and pause if the hook seems to pass through the strand rather than under both loops.

Mark the structure

Place a marker in the first and last stitch of every row and at regular intervals in rounds. Count each completed section rather than trusting the plush surface. Because some chenille constructions can shed or “worm,” make and wash a sample before using the yarn for a high-wear item.

Keep this in mind

Combine touch, contrast, markers and frequent counting; plush yarn becomes manageable when the hidden structure stays documented.
