Crochet Circle Ruffling: Correcting Too Many Increases

When a circle's outer edge contains more fabric than can lie flat, it waves or ruffles. The first task is locating where the excess began.

Audit the stitch totals

Count each round and compare it with the intended increase sequence. Check whether an increase was repeated, whether the join was mistaken for a stitch or whether extra stitches entered the same space.

Test the circle on a flat surface

Let the piece relax without stretching or pinning. Mild waviness in an unfinished round can settle, but pronounced folds signal too much circumference. Blocking cannot permanently fix a structural excess.

Correct the earliest affected round

Undo to the first round that will not lie flat and rework the planned count. If the counts are correct, compare a swatch with a smaller hook or a different increase distribution approved for the stitch. Avoid scattering unrecorded decreases, which makes later shaping difficult to follow.

Keep this in mind

Locate the first excess round, restore its intended count and change hook or increase placement only through a measured test.
