How to Clean and Care for Crochet Hooks
Share
Hand oils, lotion and fiber dust can collect on hook handles and joins. Gentle, material-aware care protects the finish.
Start dry
Wipe the shaft, head and handle with a clean soft cloth. Use a soft brush or cotton swab around grooves and joins without pushing debris into moving parts.
Metal and solid plastic
If the maker permits, a lightly damp cloth with mild soap can remove residue. Wipe again with clean water and dry immediately. Do not soak hooks with glued handles, printed markings or internal joins.
Wood and bamboo
Avoid prolonged water and harsh cleaners. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for sealed or unfinished wood. Inspect for rough areas rather than sanding or oiling blindly, which can change diameter or finish.
Ergonomic and interchangeable tools
Keep soft handles away from solvents. Clean cable connections gently and store parts dry. If a hook becomes cracked, sticky, corroded or rough enough to damage yarn, remove it from active use.
Keep this in mind
Use the gentlest cleaning method first and follow the tool maker’s guidance for wood, coatings, handles and joins.
