How to Wash Handmade Crochet Without Guessing
Share
A finished piece may contain several fibers, dyes, trims and hours of work. Care begins with the most specific information available.
Find the original directions
Read the yarn band or saved photograph for washing, drying, ironing and bleaching symbols. If several yarns were used, follow a method safe for all of them.
Test the swatch
Wash the project swatch first when possible. Check colour transfer, size, surface and softness after it dries. If the swatch changes unexpectedly, do not assume the full item will behave differently.
Support the fabric
Handmade pieces can become heavy when wet. Lift them with support rather than pulling from one corner. Avoid aggressive rubbing or wringing, and reshape only within the intended dimensions.
Dry as directed
Use a dryer only when the label permits it. For flat drying, place the piece on a clean surface with air circulation and allow it to dry completely before storage.
Keep this in mind
Follow the label, test the swatch and support the whole piece whenever it is wet.
