What to Do With Leftover Yarn and Small Scraps
Share
A scrap collection is only a resource if you can identify and retrieve what is inside it.
Sort before saving
Discard pieces too short or damaged to use safely. Group useful lengths by fiber and care needs, then by weight or colour. Keep unknown yarns separate from labelled material.
Label partial balls
Add the yarn name, colour, dye lot, fiber and weight category. Weigh the remainder if an accurate scale is available. A small note prevents future guesswork.
Choose scrap-sized work
- Colour samples and gauge practice.
- Small motifs assembled later.
- Tassels, pompoms or decorative ties where appropriate.
- Visible mending and repair tests.
- Planned stripes with compatible yarns.
Check compatibility
When combining scraps, align thickness, care and intended wear. Avoid using unknown yarn in a project where fiber or wash instructions are important.
If local textile reuse or recycling accepts yarn, follow its current preparation rules rather than assuming every fibre is eligible.
Keep this in mind
Save only usable lengths, label what you know and choose projects scaled honestly to the amount available.
