How to Store Yarn Neatly and Protect It From Dust
Share
Storage should protect the yarn and preserve the information needed to use it. A beautiful pile without labels is still difficult to plan from.
Store clean and dry
Keep yarn away from damp areas, strong direct sunlight and open dust. Make sure yarn is fully dry before sealing it in a container.
Preserve the label
Keep each band around the skein or place loose labels in the same bag. For leftovers, add the yarn name, colour, dye lot, fiber and estimated amount to a small tag.
Group for retrieval
Sort by fiber, weight, project or colour—whichever matches how you choose yarn. Use clear bins, labelled boxes or divided drawers so a needed skein can be found without emptying the entire shelf.
Inspect periodically
Look for moisture, odour, insects or damaged packaging. Isolate any questionable yarn from the rest until the cause is understood and the material can be handled appropriately.
Avoid packing skeins so tightly that labels tear or the yarn loses its useful form.
Keep this in mind
Protect yarn from damp, dust and prolonged light while keeping every label attached or recorded.
