Lemon Peel Stitch: Alternating Heights Without Losing Count
Share
Lemon peel stitch creates small, balanced texture by alternating short and tall stitches. Its simple repeat still needs an accurate edge count.
Establish the repeat
Work one single crochet and one double crochet across according to the pattern. The required starting multiple and turning treatment can differ, so use the designer's stitch count rather than assuming every version begins the same way.
Read the stitch below
Many versions place a single crochet into the double crochet below and a double crochet into the single below. The change in height creates the pebbled surface. Pause after several stitches to confirm the alternation has not shifted.
Mark both edge stitches
Place a marker in the first and last actual stitch, especially if a turning chain does not count. Count at the end of every row. If the fabric begins to narrow, check for a missed final stitch before adding anything to compensate.
Keep this in mind
Maintain the short-tall alternation and mark the real edge stitches so the textured rows stay the same width.
